Bags with space for 17 inch notebooks always look very big, and this one is no exception. The upside is you have enough space for pretty much anything you might want to bring with you. With a professional, black look and a cleverly organised interior, this BackPack is the pick of the litter. It seems to be of high quality and has a number of features that makes it comfortable to carry, even when it is full of stuff and heavy. It bodes well.
Materials
The bag is made of nylon treated in various ways. The bottom is durable which makes sense as it is exposed to more wear and tear. It is coated with Teflon which – as we know from pots and pans – makes it easy to remove dirt.

It seems to be a high-quality bag, and I am quite sure it can last for many trips and even years. The zippers are self-repairing, and while I have no clue what that means, they slide up and down nice and easily and seem very sturdy!
Handles and straps

As it is not always so simple to swing a backpack onto your back, they naturally made some handles. The handles are stitched to the rest of the bag and so do not break easily. They are padded at the point where you would grab them, making them more comfortable to use. All in all, they have worked hard on optimising the carrying experience.

The straps to carry it on your back are probably the most interest as we are dealing with a backpack after all. The straps are shaped like what resembles a soft j. That ensures the weight is centred on the upper (and stronger) part of your back. You can also strap it around your waist to make it easier on your lumbar region.

The bag is generally very ergonomic and comfortable to carry. It is nice to see how much effort they put into ensuring it rests well on your back, because such bags can hold a lot of weight.
In addition to the straps, there is also padding by the loins so that there is support all the way from top to bottom. Superb.
Compartments and functions
Outside the bag are two smaller, zippered pockets on both sides that can hold important things which must be easily accessible such as keys. On the exterior of each is a small net where you can put various loose items.

At the front of the bag are two compartments: 1 smaller at the top with space for e.g. bottled water and the traditional pencil case, and 1 at the which is split into two with space for sheets of paper, small notebooks etc.

The compartments are ideal for things you need swift access to – for example on the train where you do not want to rip out the entire contents of the bag just to get a coke. These types of “practical” pockets are brilliant!
Bag interior
There is very little inside the bag besides space – lots of space. There are actually two compartments in one. In the middle of the “large” compartment is where you will typically leave your laptop, which effectively creates two additional pockets on either side of it. They are equally tall and wide, but of different depth. The rear pocket holds space for stacks of paper, binders and such, while the front pocket can contain books and other large items. The pockets are nice and deep, and there are an adequate number of compartments. If you are going away for the weekend or so, this bag is a perfect travelling companion.
The computer storage area consists of an elastic fabric attached to a harder material with a sort of lid. That makes a sort of pouch, and you simply pull it at the top to take out pouch and computer. The great thing about this pouch is that it never touches the bottom of the bag, ensuring the computer does not smash against the floor if you drop the bag. Additionally, the hard top protects the computer from above. A very clever solution!
Conclusion
Umates Top BackPack is a well-made and thoroughly sleek bag! We could actually end it right here because that really covers what the bag is all about, but I feel the product deserves a bit more text. Why is it so great?
First of all, it has a number of pockets well organised on the exterior, exactly where you need them the most. These are the pockets in which you keep items that you need swift access to. In our opinion the organisation of compartments is incredibly intelligent, and the interior of the bag has all the space you could wish for within this segment of bags.
Furthermore, the bag is of highest quality and appears very durable in all the right places, and very strong even where you would not expect it. The zippers – which many of us hate from time to time – are durable and slide up and down as they should. The handles are soft and very comfortable.
In addition to all that is the whole aspect regarding the back. The bag is really made to ensure you always carry it in the best possible manner, regardless of how much weight it holds. It will thus not break and strain your back as many cheaper bags do. If you go for a Umates product you are, in our opinion, guaranteed a high quality and great finish. We have tested a lot of products from Umates, and they never fail to impress. They enjoy a good reputation and always proof they know what they are doing. This backpack is no exception; it is professional and great for everyday use, and we give it our warmest recommendations.
