Since Intel introduced their Atom back in 2008, most netbooks have been equipped with one of the powersaving processors. In fact, the presence of an Atom CPU has practically become part of what defines a netbook.
Part of the reason is undoubtedly that AMD - Intel's main rival - have been hesistant to jump on the netbook wagon. They do have a platform called Geode though, which was launched back in 2003 and used in the One Laptop Per Child project. Geode was designed to use little power, so it would have been an obvious step for AMD to modify it for netbook use.
That has finally happened with the Asus Eee PC 1201K, which comes with a 1.4GHz Geode NX 1750 processor (1.4GHz). It has a TDP of 25; for comparison, the new Intel Atom N455 is clocked to 1.66GHz is has a TDP of 6.5, so it is obvious AMD falls short when it comes to performance versus power consumption.
Other specs include a 12.1 inch display (1366 x 768 pixels), 1GB of DDR1(!) RAM, up to a 320GB hard drive, Windows XP Home and a 6-celled battery that can go for 2 hours. Yes, just 2 hours. That sounds absurd when you compare it with other netbooks that can manage at least thrice that.
There is also draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, Ethernet LAN, 0.3M webcam + microphone and the standard ports. It features the typical Seashell design, has a chiclet keyboard and weighs 1.46kg.
Asus have not released pricing information yet. A shame, because this is where the device might actually be interesting - the weaker specs could be offset by substantial savings, which would make this netbook interesting for e.g. smaller children.
