Toshiba logoToshiba has unveiled the Portege M780, a small convertible tablet at 12.1 inches. If you take a look at the tech specs though, you could easily mistake it for a much larger device, for it offers some pretty powerful hardware like a Core i7 processor and DDR3 RAM, a rarity in this segment.

Portege M780 is a tablet, and as a tablet it naturally has that rotatable screen that can be placed directly upon the keyboard. It is also touch-enabled and comes with a digitizer if you prefer that to using your fingers.

Other features include an integrated webcam (with Toshiba Face Recognition software) and mikrophone plus a fingerprint reader. The eSATA/USB port also has the Sleep and Charge function, meaning it can be used to recharge USB gadgets while the computer is turned off.

As always, Toshiba include the EasyGuard security/safety suite, which among other things encompasses a spill-resistant keyboard, hard drive with freefall sensor and Computrace that can track the device if it is ever lost or stolen.

Portege M780 has the following specifications:

- 12.1 inch LED-backlit display, 1280 x 800 pixels resolution
- Up to an Intel Core i7-620M dual-core processor (2.66GHz or 3.333GHz via Turbo Boost, 4MB cache)
- Integrated Intel HD graphics
- Up to 4GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
- Up to 320GB 7200RPM hard drive
- DVD Super Multi optical drive
- 6-cell Li-ion 51Wh battery, lasts up to 4.86 hours per charge
- Windows 7 Professional (32 or 64 bit) + recovery media for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
- 802.11 a/g/draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, modem
- 2x USB 2.0, eSATA/USB combo, ExpressCard slot, MMC card reader, Docking connector
- Weight: 2.1kg

A pretty hefty package if you are prepared to pay for it ($1,799). If you can live with the lower performance, the basic model which includes a Core i3-330M dual-core processor (2.13GHz, 3MB cache) and less RAM and smaller HDD for $1,399.
