Today Toshiba unveiled their latest ultrathin notebook, the Portege R700. It is described as the thinnest, full-functioning laptop in this part of the world with its 13.3 inch display and height of less than an inch (only 16.8mm at the thinnest point).
Thanks to what they call Airflow Cooling technology, Toshiba have managed to fit in one of Intel's Core 2010 processors (Core i3, i5 or i7), so you do not have to maek the choice between mobility and raw processing power. Then there are up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB hard drive with free fall sensor or a 128GB SSD, as well as an integrated DVD drive, something you rarely see on laptops of this size.
The display is LED-backlit, runs a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and - perhaps best of all - comes in two variants: TruBrite and anti-glare. The latter - a type we do not see often enough - is particularly handy for those on the go who do not have control of ambient lighting.
There is also 3G, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, draft-N WiFi and Gigabit Ethernet LAN, so connectivity should never be much of an issue. Ports are as expected: 3x USB, eSATA/USB combo (Sleep-n-Charge), HDMI, VGA and multi-in-1 card reader. There is also a docking port that supports USB 3.0.
Otherwise Portege R700 features a VGA webcam, fingerprint reader, multi-touch trackpad, chiclet keyboard and a brushed magnesium exterior that looks undeniably good.
Portege R700 can manage a battery life of 8-9 hours and will be available from August starting at $899.
