Sony VAIO logoToday Sony unveiled a new VAIO notebook by the simple name of "E". It caters to the multimedia user and the more casual gamer, but definitely also those who just want - in terms of looks - a unique laptop.

VAIO E has a semi-large widescreen display of 15.5 inches (1366 x 768 pixels resolution) - not bad for a quick movie on the train or plane. The Blu-ray drive should really come in handy here, and Sony even promise the battery will last for 2.5 hours of DVD playback (3 hours at normal use and maximum brightness, 3.5 hours at "standard" settings). Then when you are at home you can connect it to your flatscreen TV via HDMI and basically use it as a DVD drive.

The design itself is actually quite discreet, but that quickly changes if you pick one of the more flamboyant colours, such as pink or limegreen. If you are feeling particularly bold, go right ahead and get a skin for the keyboard as well (and even the mouse, if you are going to buy one from Sony). The keyboard actually looks very good, being edge-to-edge with an island-style layout (extra space between keys) and all the number keys at the right.

Sony VAIO E has the following specifications:

- Up to an Intel Core i5-520M Processor (2.4GHz, 3MB cache)
- Up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM
- Up to a 500GB 7200RPM HDD
- IGP from Intel or an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5470 dedicated GPU (512MB, DirectX 11 compatible)
- Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional (64 bit)
- Blu-ray drive
- 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, Gigabit Ethernet LAN
- HDMI, VGA, 3x USB, eSATA, ExpressCard slot, SD card reader, MMC card reader, audio jacks
- 2.7kg

That actually looks like a pretty good collection of hardware that can handle all standard tasks, and then some. Just do not expect too much when it comes to gaming - Radeon HD 5470 belongs to the lower middle-class of cards, so you will probably have to make do with minimum details in newer and more demanding games.

Sony VAIO E will be available sometime in February at a starting price of $799. Certain models will also ship with an additional battery.
