MSI is at it again, adding another device to perhaps the quickest growing notebook series. This time the name is X360, a quite ultraportable device of 13 inches with a low weight, long battery life and a Core i5 processor from Intel.
To be precise, the X-Slim X360 is powered by Intel's Core i5-520UM (two cores, 1.06GHz, 3MB cache), one of the less power-intensive processors from the relatively new line. It can be overclocked to 1.866GHz via Turbo Boost though - if for example the processor is not too hot and one core is inactive, the other core will be overclocked automatically. The IGP is so deeply embedded into this platform that you cannot get rid of it, so if you are looking for a gaming device, do not look here.
Otherwise the ultraportable gets up to 4GB 800MHz DDR3 RAM, 250/320/500GB HDD and the Windows 7 Home Premium OS. You get to choose between a 4- or 8-celled battery, with the latter capable of delivering juice for up to nine hours, quite impressive for the specs really. However, X-Slim is designed for mobility, so perhaps you should not expect any less.
When it comes to connectivity and I/Os, you get the standard package: 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, Ethernet LAN, 2x USB 2.0, webcam, D-sub, HDMI, 2-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC) plus the mandatory audio jacks. Not a whole lot of surprises, though it is nice to see HDMI is fast becoming a must. If only they could have fit in another USB port...
X-Slim X360 has a 13 inch display (1366 x 768 pixels, glare), and is about 2.2cm thick, so the lack of an optical drive should not really surprise anyone. The weight lands at 1.4kg (with the 4-celled battery).
Precisely when it will be available and at which price is - as usual - information that MSI has opted to withhold.
