MSI have introduced another couple of products; this time they are two news mini desktop PCs, Eee Box DE220 and DC220. According to MSI, they combine the mobility of a notebook with the performance of a desktop.
We are not exactly sure about the latter; based on Intel's new "Pine Trail" Atom platform, they are not exactly the most powerful desktops around. However, MSI promises they make very little noise (24dB) and use far less (90%) electricity than a "typical" desktop. Furthermore, neither of the coatings contain hazardous materials, and they are not made of hard-to-recycle-plastics either. Good to know.
Onward to the specs - both are, as noted above, based on an Atom processor, either the D410 (1.66GHz) or the D510 (dual-core, 1.66GHz), and they have up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB 7200RPM hard drive along with the Windows 7 Home Premium OS. When it comes to graphics, there is some differentiation; while DC220 has to make do with Intel's GMA 3150 IGP, DE220 gets a dedicated Mobility Radeon HD 4300 GPU from ATi.
The latter is probably more for saving power than to provide the best performance in games and such, but at least it can handle 1080p full HD video. Because of that, DE220 also gets an HDMI port (which DC220 has to do without) so you can connect it to your HDTV and use it as a sort of multimedia cente, although that is perhaps made difficult by the lack of an optical drive.
Otherwise they have identical connectivity and ports with 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi, IR receiver, VGA, 4x USB 2.0, eSATA, audio jacks (output with SPDIF) and a 6-in-1 card reader that supports XD/SD/mini SD/Micro SD/MMC/MS formats.
Both weigh 2kg and will be available in either black or blue. No word on pricing or a release date yet.
