MSI logo MSI's popular X-Slim family is about to get a new member, the X-Slim X610. Like the X600 in the same series, the new notebook offers a 15.6 inch display and the sleek, thin design that characterizes X-Slim. In this case, however, MSI have moved from Intel's CULV to AMD's Neo platform.

And it is not the first time their; just last week, MSI announced the X-Slim X410 as an alternative to the X400. One has to assume the reason is due to pricing - Intel's CULV platform is not exactly cheap, and many blame it for the lower-than-expected sales of ultrathin notebooks.

Since the X-Slim X610 is one of the larger models in the series, it focuses a bit more on multimedia use. To this end, MSI have fitted it with a 512MB dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 GPU. Though it is not as "high-end" as MSI claim, it is still vastly superior to any integrated graphics solution and it should have little trouble with older games (forget about newer and more demanding games like Crysis and GTA4 though).

Other specs include an AMD Athlon Neo processor (according to Fudzilla a 1.6GHz Neo MV-40) with the RS690E chipset, up to 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM, a 320/500/640 GB hard drive and Windows Vista Home Premium. There is no optical drive - it really would not go well with the whole "slim" concept - but it seems slightly off to market a notebook with no optical drive as a "multimedia feast". Well, there is always the option of an external DVD Super-Multi / Blu-Ray drive.

Connectivity includes 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN, 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi as well as optional Bluetooth, HDMI output, VGA output, 3x USB 2.0 ports and a 2-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC). There is also a 1.3MP webcam.

The X610 ships with a 6 or 9 celled battery; MSI does not state exact battery lives, only that they are "twice as long as those of standard notebooks of the same size". The weight lands at 2.1kg (with the 6-celled battery) and it is 25mm thick.
