Lenovo logo Lenovo have updated their SL series, which is now called "L". They may have cut away a letter, but they have added better hardware that includes a Core 2010 processor from Intel and a dedicated GPU from ATi.

It seems there are just two new devices for the new series, namely L412 and L512. The difference appears to lie in the display sizes of 14 and 15 inches, respectively. Lenovo mention an HD resolution in the press release, which usually means 1366 x 768 pixels.

That is nothing special, but the display type is. Rather than the usual glossy you get an anti-glare display. Although it might not give you the best overall picture, it does mean you can actually use the device for anything other than a mirror if you are exposed to direct sunlight.

Otherwise they both get a Core i3 or i5 processor with Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost, which improve performance in both single- and multi-threaded applications. There is also integrated graphics from Intel, or a choice of ATi Mobility Radeon cards.

Additional specs include up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a choice between hard drives, Windows 7 OS, DVD drive (or Blu-ray) and an optional 9-celled battery that can last up to 8 hours (the default battery has a lower capacity).

Then there is WiFi, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet LAN as well as optional 3G. I/Os include 4x USB (one powered to recharge your gadgets when the computer is turned off), an eSATA/USB combo, DisplayPort and VGA.

When it comes to special features you of course get trackpoint in addition to a trackpad with multi-gesture functions, a couple of buttons for controllong volume (up, down, mute) as well as optional webcam and fingerprint reader. The two laptops also consist of 18% post-consumer content, which is the highest among laptops according to Lenovo.

Both L412 and L512 will be available from the middle of May, starting at $650.
