Lenovo logo Rumours about a Lenovo ThinkPad netbook have been circulating for quite a while now, perhaps since last year when Lenovo launched their IdeaPad netbook. Now ThinkPadToday is saying we will not have to wait much longer - according to them, the new ThinkPad device will be launched on January 5th 2010. The name will supposedly be ThinkPad X100e (not X200e as previously assumed) with the following tagline: "Entry level ultra portable, the first ThinkPad of its size".

So how much truth is there to this? Exactly who their source is, ThinkPadToday never specify, and they have nothing but guesses when it comes to specs. "Leaked" pictures of the ThinkPad X100e (see below) indicate the device will be white, but it is thought Lenovo will instead stick to the matte black that characterizes most of the ThinkPad series.

ThinkPadToday have the following specs in mind:

- 12.1 inch TFT LCD display, 1280x800 pixels resolution
- AMD Athlon Neo processor (1.6GHz) with dedicated ATI Radeon HD3410 GPU
- Alternatively: Intel Centrino ULV (1.4GHz) processor with GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics
- 3GB DDR2 RAM
- 160/250/320GB hard drive, possibly with a few SSD options
- Windows 7 OS
- 6 or 9 celled Li-ion battery
- Integrated mobile broadband
- UltraBase docking station with built-in optical drive

What the price will be (if the device will ever materialize) is anyone's guess. Lenovo has so far remained quiet, refusing to either confirm or deny the rumours of a ThinkPad netbook.

How realistic such a device is, well, that is a good question. If Lenovo were really out to make a ThinkPad netbook, they could have done so much earlier - granted they may have been waiting for the launch of Windows 7, but that still does not explain a January launch.

In any case, it cannot be long until Lenovo give us something official, if in fact ThinkPadToday is right about the netbook coming in about 2 months.
