The first time the world laid eyes on HP's smartbook, the Compaq AirLife 100, was at CES back in January. A smartbook is a sort of mix between a netbook and smartphone, with a focus on mobility, extensive communication abilities and functionality.
AirLife is based on the Google Android OS but features software that allows it to work with Windows devices. QuickOffice allows you to work with Microsoft Office documents, RoadSync Exchange is used to synchronise e-mail, contacts and calendar, and there is also Adobe Flash Lite for the browser.
The device has a resistive touch-screen at 10.1 inches (1024 x 600 pixels), which is basically meant to be used with a stylus. Otherwise it has a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with the QSD8250 chipset, 512MB RAM and a 16GB SSD - should you need more storage, you can expand with an SD card (up to 32GB).
They are not the most impressive specs, perhaps, but a device like this is not designed for heavy lifting. Rather the focus is on mobility, and it does that well. AirLife weighs only 1kg and is 23.8mm thick, so it should fit in most bags.
The communication possibilities are also quite good with WiFi, Bluetooth v2.0 + EDR, 3G and GPS. When it comes to I/Os, it has - in addition to the aforementioned SD card reader - Micro USB as well as audio jacks. There are also a couple of speakers and a 0.3MP webcam.
Since AirLife has not yet been officially introduced, we know little else. It does have a Li-polymer batteri though, and rumour has it that it can lasts for 12 hours or 10 days on standby.
When AirLife 100 will be available is as of yet unknown, as is price.
