HP logo HP have unvelied their newest workstation, the EliteBook 8740w, a monster of a laptop at 17 inches. It is filled with powerful hardware like a Core i7 processor and 16GB of DDR3 RAM, plus it looks great with its aluminium finish.

EliteBook 8740w is made for professionals who require solid computing power, for example for CAD work, which is obvious when you look at the insides. The GPU choice is between a 1GB ATI FirePro M7820, 1GB Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M or 1GB Nvidia Quadro FX 3800M. The latter is one of the most powerful professional GPUs for mobile workstations to date, but rumours say the as of yet unofficial ATi FirePro M7820 may beat it.

As mentioned above, you can combine it with one of Intel's new Core i processors, such as the Core i7-720QM (quad-core, 1.3GHz or 2.6GHz via Turbo Boost, 6MB cache) and up to a staggering 16GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM. You can of course also go for a toned down version with a Core i5 processor and just 2GB of RAM, but where is the fun in that?

Other specs include up to a 500GB hard drive or 256GB SSD, SuperMulti DVD or Blu-ray drive along with an 8-celled (73Whr) Li-ion battery. The OS is Windows 7 Professional (64 bit), and the display is anti-glare, LED-backlit and runs a resolution of either 1440 x 900 or 1920 x 1200 pixels. Otherwise you get Gigabit Ethernet LAN, 802.11 a/b/g/draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1 as well as optional mobile broadband and GPS.

There is also a wide array of ports, such as 2x USB 2.0, VGA, DisplayPort, Firewire, eSATA, docking connector plus Smart Card, SD and ExpressCard slots. Of course you also get a couple of USB 3.0 ports that deliver up to 10 times higher transfer rates than the old USB 2.0 standard.

Other features include a 2MP webcam, spill resistant keyboard, fingerprint reader and some other security options like Computrace.

HP EliteBook 8740w starts at $1,999.00 and should be available in April.
