Pioneer logo Pioneer has unveiled a handsome little netbook designed for those who want both mobility and the option of indulging in a bit of gaming now and then. For that very purpose, they have equipped the DreamBook Lite U12 with the next-generation of Nvidia's ION platform, popularly known as ION 2.

Unlike the previous ION platform, ION 2 is actually just a dedicated GPU, not a system on a chip. It comes in two versions: one for desktops with 16 cores and one for netbooks, with 8 cores. Though you get the latter in DreamBook Lite U12, do not worry too much - Nvidia still promises up to 10 times greater graphics performance compared to Intel's IGPs.

That means you can stream Flash videos (for example YouTube) in HD quality via GPU acceleration, or play games like World of Warcraft. Another nice feature about ION 2 is that it uses the Optimus technology. Optimus automatically switches between the IGP and Nvidia GPU so as to ensure the dedicated GPU never runs and eats power needlessly. That means netbooks with ION can reach a battery life of up to 10 hours, which is also the case on DreamBook Lite U12.

It is powered by an Intel Atom processor (N450 or N470 at 1.66GHz or 1.83GHz, respectively) and comes with up to 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive (though you can upgrade to a 1TB HDD or 256GB SSD if you are willing to part with the cash) and a choice of operating systems, such as Linux or Windows 7 Home Premium. If you want to reach the aforementioned battery life, you will have to pay extra for a 6-celled battery - otherwise you just get a 4-celled one.

Connectivity amounts to 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi and Ethernet LAN with optional Bluetooth and 3G. You also get the standard array of ports, including HDMI, VGA, 3x USB 2.0, 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro) and audio jacks. There is also a 1.3MP webcam.

DreamBook Lite U12 has a 12.1 inch LED-backlit LCD display with an HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels) and weighs just 1.45kg with a thickness of 2.7cm. All in all it seems like quite the sleek device - if only you did not have to go all the way to Australia to get one...
