American OCZ have just announced a completely new concept in the area of netbooks: a do-it-yourself netbook called Neutrino. Okay, so you won't be doing it all by yourself, but you still have a large degree of control without making it too much of a hassle. Neutrino comes with a 10.1 inch LED-backlit WSVGA display (no, you can't change this) with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels.

Besides that, it's powered by Intel's N270 Atom processor at 1.6GHz with 533MHz FSB and 512KB L2 Cache. Atom comes with its standard brother-in-arms, the Intel i945GSE chipset. There's also the 802.11 b/g standard of wireless, 2x USB 2.0 ports, 1x VGA, 1x RJ-45, 1x PCI-Express card reader, 1x Kensington lock slot, 1x sound input jack (microphone), and 1x sound output jack (headphones).

Neutrino also comes with a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam and integrated microphone, 2x 1.5W speakers, and a 4 celled 2200mAh batteri. As such, Neutrino has little to offer except for the slightly larger than normal battery. However, that's not what it markets itself on, and this is where things get interesting

You get to install RAM - up to 2GB DDR2 of it, in fact - and either a hard drive or SSD. The hard drive is limited to a 2.5" 250GB at 5400 rpm, while the SSD has to be kept between 30 and 250GB. As such, you could start out with a smaller hard drive and then upgrade to SSD once it gets cheaper (fingers crossed).

You also have the option of putting in a 4-in-1 card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS-Pro), if you so desired. Neutrino also supports an external display of up to 1600x1200 pixels, and the Microsoft Windows XP and gOS/Ubuntu Linux operating systems.

To get around the possible issue of people installing components which are not compatible, OCZ has created a list of "validated" hardware. The idea is then that you go out and find the best price for the RAM and storage you want (plus you save the money that would have gone to technicians otherwise). Neutrino naturally comes with a guide so even us mortals can follow along.

If you put it all together sensibly - especially by choosing Linux as your operating system - you should be able to get a price below £190 (€200). Not too shabby.
