Last year, all smaller laptops had to have a CULV processor Intel, unless of course they were small enough to have the even more power efficient Atom CPU. That left little room for rival AMD, which never really managed to deliver an acceptable alternative.
But things have evolved somewhat. Many people like the form-factor of the netbook but not the performance, yet upgrading to Intel's CULV line of chips does involve a price leap. As such, AMD have carved out a market share right between Atom and CULV, and we see more and more laptops bearing an AMD processor.
The latest is the Dell Inspiron M101z of 11.6 inches, which tries to entice with a starting price of £379 and an AMD Athlon Neo processor (single or dual-core) with ATi RS880M integrated graphics, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, up to a 320GB hard drive and the Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) OS.
Plenty of power for your average computing needs, but mobility is not so bad either. You have to remember 11.6 inches is not particularly large (even though the keyboard is still "full size"), and it weighs some 1.56kg with battery. This can last for up to 6.5 hours, which is not all that bad, really. It may appear a little chubby, but most Inspirons do.
Ports and connectivity are standard with draft-N WiFi, Ethernet LAN, Bluetooth 3.0 and HDMI, VGA, 3x USB, 3-in-1 card reader and of course the audio jacks.
No, it certainly is not flashy, but if you simply need a small but functional device, this may be worth a look.
