AVADirect logoA few times a year, a couple of notebooks emerge claiming to be the best/fastest/most powerful for the gaming segment. This time around the contender is Clevo X8100 from AVADirect - whether it actually deserves the title is beyond us, but it does offer some of the best CPU and GPU components you can get for a notebook.

Clevo X8100 is based on an Intel Core i7-920XM quad-core processor (2GHz or up to 3.2GHz via Turbo Boost, 8MB cache) - right now the most powerful notebook processor available. Graphics are handled by two 1GB GeForce GTX 285M GPUs from Nvidia, some of the best you can get when it comes to notebook graphics. In SLI configuration, those two babies should be able to handle even the most demanding games at highest details and resolution.

In addition to that you get up to 8GB of 1300MHz DDR3 RAM, which should be more than enough for most, plus you can fit a total of three storage units in RAID 0 or 1 into the device - there are plenty of choices, ranging from anything in between maximum capacity with three 640GB hard drives or maximum performance with three SSDs.

If you feel the need, go ahead and add a Blu-ray burner to the device which also has the Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) OS and a nice, big LED-backlit display at 18.4 inches, running a very nice full HD resolution at 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Wireless connectivity is quite standard with draft-N WiFi and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR. However, the amount of I/Os you get is almost ridiculous: HDMI, DVI, VGA, eSATA, 3x USB, FireWire, RJ-45 (Gigabit Ethernet LAN), 7-in-1 card reader, ExpressCard slot, TV tuner and audio jacks (plus an extra S/PDIF output).

Other features include an island-style keyboard, a number of touch-buttons that control things like wireless status and volume, 8 dedicated gaming buttons, 2MP webcam, plenty of customisable lights and 5 built-in speakers.

The price starts at just under $2,500, but if you want the best of the best expect to pay at least double that.
