Asus logo The rumour mongerers over at Digitimes are now at it again. This time the topic is a new 3D notebook from Asus, dubbed G72Gx. According to industry sources (anonymous, of course) the device will launch sometime in Q1 of 2010. The G72GX will pack some solid hardware - an Intel Core i7 processor, among others - but rather than use the popular polarised glasses, Asus has opted to use LCD shutter glasses.

LCD shutter glasses work by alternatingly darkening each eye while making the other transparent, in line with the refresh rate of the display. The display then shows each eye images in slightly different perspectives, which gives the 3D illusion. The glasses are synchronized with the display via an infrared signal.

A problem with the glasses is that since one eye is always dark, the effective refresh rate of the display is halved, meaning the actual refresh rate has to be twice as high as normal to compensate. If note, you can get serious problems with pain in the eyes and headaches. Luckily Asus thought of this, so they gave the display a refresh rate of 120Hz rather than the standard 60Hz.

Advantages of this technology includes a much wider angle of view and almost no "ghosting" at all. According to Asus, LCD shutter glasses are better for video in full, 1080p HD resolutions.

The G72GX has the following specifications:

- 17.3 inch display
- Intel Core i7 processor
- Nvidia GeForce GTM 160M GPU
- 4GB RAM
- 2x 320GB hard drives

As mentioned above, the G72GX will be launched at the start of next year, although a smaller 15.6 inch version by the name of G51J3D should be launched here in November, supposedly with the exact same hardware. No specific price is mentioned, but the sources say the new devices will be more expensive than comparable models from for example Acer, since Acer uses the cheaper polarised glasses.
