Asus logo Today Asus trated their new N82J notebook to an official introduction. It falls right into the new "entertainment" series, created for multimedia lovers and gamers alike with features such as Nvidia Optimus and USB 3.0.

Though not particularly big with a 14 inch display (LED-backlit, 1366 x 768 pixels resolution) and a weight of 2.3kg (with an 8-celled battery - battery life not specified), it can still be quite the little powerhouse.

For example, you can throw in an Intel Core i7-720QM processor (quad-core, 1.6GHz and up to 2.8GHz via Turbo Boost, 6MB cache) which is at the top of the Core 2010 series. There are more choices though, down to the more humble Core i3-330M (dual-core, 2.13GHz, 3MB cache).

You can configure it with up to 8GB of DDR3 1066MHz RAM, up to a 640GB 5400RPM or 500GB 7200RPM hard drive, and otherwise it features the Windows 7 Home Premium OS (64 bit), Blu-ray drive and a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT335M GPU. The latter is a middle-class card and should - at least in this setup - be able to handle newer games at medium settings and older games at top details.

Asus N82J is also equipped with Nvidia's Optimus technology, which automatically switches between the IGP and GPU. If you are gaming, GT335M will thus be turned on, and then when you quit again the device will automatically switch over to the IGP so as to conserve power.

One of the more interesting features is of course the USB 3.0 standard, which can be used to transfer data at rates up to 10 higher than the old USB 2.0. According to Asus, that means 0.01 seconds for a typical MP3 file or 70 seconds for a 25GB Blu-ray disc. Otherwise the device has SonicMaster, Asus' new standard for audio on laptops that should guarantee a better audial experience, along with Video Magic that can upscale movies to 1080 pixels full HD and accelerate frame rates up to 72FPS.

When it will be available is as of yet unknown.
