ASUS logo ASUS is out with a new series of ultrathin, CULV-based notebooks dubbed UL or UnLimited. This new series is all about reaching the heights of mobility and design without making any compromises when it comes to performance. This has resulted in a combination of a Core 2 Duo CULV processor, an aluminum-brushed exterior and battery life of up to 12 hours.

So far the series consists of three notebooks: the UL30A of 13.3 inches along with the UL50AG and UL50VG of 15.6 inches each. All run an HD resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and sport pretty much the same hardware, which includes an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor (1.3GHz) with the GS45 chipset, up to 4GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM (up to 8GB DDR2 800MHz on the UL50VG), up to a 500GB 5400RPM hard drive and Windows Vista Home Premium (comes with a free upgrade to a corresponding Windows 7 version).

The smaller UL30A misses out on an optical drive the both the UL50AG and UL50VG get a Super Multi DVD drive.

All sport Intel 4500MHD integrated graphics, and in addition to that the UL50VG gets a NVIDIA GeForce G 210M GPU with 512MB DDR3 VRAM (an average card that should have no trouble running older/less demanding games at medium to high details). The reason it gets both is to take advantage of NVIDIA HybridPower, which lets you switch off the dedicated graphics and thus save power to reach a longer battery life.

Other than that they gets standard connectivity like 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi, optional Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, Ethernet LAN, HDMI, 3x USB 2.0 ports and multi-in-1 card readers. The also sport 0.3MP integrated webcams and Lansec Alting speakers with SRS Premium Sound.

As noted above, all are cast in brushed aluminum and they sport the superior "chiclet" style keyboards with extra space between the keys. The larger models obviously include a numpad, and all get multi-touch touchpads with e.g. zoom function. The smaller UL30A weighs 1.5kg while the UL50AG and UL50VG both weigh 2.1kg.

Update:

ASUS had a couple of extra models up their sleeves: the 12.1 inch UL20A and the two 14 inchers UL80Ag and UL80V. They offer pretty much the same specs as the above models - in fact only the size really changes.

Like the UL50VG, the UL80V is a dedicated GPU version, sporting a NVIDIA GeForce G 210M GPU (512MB DDR3 VRAM), but it only gets up to 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM.

The smaller UL20A weighs 2kg and lacks as optical drive while both UL80Ag and UL80V get a Super Multi DVD drive and a weight of 2kg.

Lastly it's worth noting there will be a wider choice when it comes to processor. This stretches from a 1.2GHz Celeron to a 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo/Duo.
