Asus logo First time we heard of Asus Eee PC 1215N was back in May, and details were scarce. The next generation of Nvidia's ION platform and a mysterious dual-core Intel Atom processor for netbooks were enough to get us interested though.

It was confirmed today; Asus' new netbook on steroids gets an Intel Atom D525 processor (dual-core, 1.8GHz, 1MB cache), a significant step up from the Atom CPUs you usually find in netbooks.

It is - as expected - coupled with Nvidia ION 2, a dedicated GPU for smaller devices that can do full, 1080p HD video playback and even run some newer games. Do not expect games to come to life as it were, but there should be room for some casual gaming. The Optimus technology (automatic switch between integrated and dedicated graphics processors) comes as well to optimise power consumption.

Otherwise there is 1GB of DDR3 RAM (they could have added an extra GB, but perhaps that will be an option or you could do it yourself), 250 or 320GB hard drive plus 500GB of online storage, draft-N WiFi, Ethernet LAN and Bluetooth 3.0.

Another features that makes the Eee PC 1215N stand out is USB 3.0 - though it has been available for some months now, only a fraction of devices make use of the latest USB standard, which is up to 10 times faster than the previous. Otherwise it has all the standard ports, including HDMI.

Eee PC 1215N has a 12.1 inch display (1366 x 768 pixels) and a funny little feature in the way of a cover for the webcam, in case you do not want to be seen but for some reason are reluctant to turn of the cam.

No word on availability or pricing just yet. The consensus seems to be a price above $500 though.
