Asus Eee PC 1201N gets Nordic launch in June

Asus logo We first saw Asus Eee PC 1201PN at CeBit in March, and already back then were we smitten with the netbook sporting the next generation of Nvidia's ION platform and an exterior in brushed aluminium.

Today Asus revealed that it will be launched in the Nordic countries in June, starting at around €529. It is a fair bit higher than what a netbook typically costs, but Eee PC 1201PN is far from a typical netbook.

To start with, there is of course ION 2, which unlike the first version of ION is a dedicated GPU. Nvidia promises a performance 10 times higher than that of integrated graphics, plus mainstream gaming (games like World of Warcraft) and fuld HD (1080p) video playback so you can make proper use of the HDMI port.

1201PN is also the largest Eee PC to date with a display of 12.1 inches (1366 x 768 pixels), and the first of its kind to feature a brushed aluminium exterior. It looks undeniably gorgeous, and that Asus have focused on design is obvious. The touchpad flows seamlessly into the wrist support area and is almost invisible while the large keyboard looks very inviting with extra space between the keys.

Eee PC 1201PN has the following specs:

- 12.1 inch LED-backlit display, 1366 x 768 pixels
- Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz, 512K cache)
- Nvidia ION 2
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- 2GB DDR2 RAM
- 250GB hard drive + 500GB online hard drive (free for 1 year)
- draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, Ethernet LAN
- HDMI, VGA, 3x USB, multi-in-1 card reader, audio jacks
- 0.3M webcam
- 1.46kg (with 6-celled battery)

According to Asus, the battery is good for up to 6 hours, but we assume that is only possible if the device is equipped with Nvidia's Optimus technology that can switch over to the integrated graphics to save power. Engadget claim the first 1201PN devices will not feature Optimus and predict a battery life of just 2 hours, so you should probably check with your retailer before buying.
