Asus logo We have been waiting paitently for three weeks for an official release of the Asus Eee PC 1201N sporting Nvidia's ION platform since it appeared on a Chinese site. Asus seems determenied to keep us waiting, but luckily the specifications have been leaked, as have the specifications of the slighty more budget-minded 1201HA. Both are netbooks of 12.1 inches - as the name implies - and both run an HD resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

The Eee PC 1201N is the more serious machine of the two (to the extent a netbook can actually be serious) with a dual core 1.6GHz Intel Atom N330 processor and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU which together gives the ION platform and thus support of DirectX 10 and HD video. There is also 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB hard drive and an HDMI port.

The Eee PC 1201HA is a more standard netbook with a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor and the (good) old GMA 500 integrated graphics. The remaining hardware has been toned down a bit as well, leaving it with 2GB DDR2 RAM and a 250GB hard drive and, tragically, no HDMI port.

Despite their differences, the two netbooks also have a lot in common, such as the Windows 7 Home Premium OS, a 6 celled battery (should last for up to 8 hours, but expect the 1201HA outperform), a touchpad with multi-touch functions like zoom, 0.3MP integrated webcam and supposedly 500GB of online storage. Both weigh 1.41kg.

Connectivity and ports are also identical (except for HDMI as noted above) with 802.11 b/g/draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth, RJ-45 (Ethernet LAN), 3x USB 2.0 ports, VGA output, SD card reader and the mandatory audio jacks.

Pricing and availibity are both unknown at this stage. We did, however, see the Asus Eee PC 1201N on a leaked roadmap at a price of $500, but that was with another processor as well as less RAM and a smaller hard drive.
