Asus announced fourth generation of Eee PC netbooks

The first time we heard of the Eee PC 1015PE, 1016P and 1018P - collectively known as the fourth generation of Eee PCs - was at CeBit i March, and now they have finally been treated to an official announcement with press release and all.

There are some pretty exciting features here, including cloud computing, aluminium exteriors, USB 3.0 and (for the semi-paranoid who think they are being watched by their webcam) a lid for the webcam in case you do not want to be seen. All that in a small package of 10.1 inches (1024 x 600 pixes).

Eee PC 1015PE

An update to the Seashell series. There does not seem to be much of an update to the hardware though, for the Asus website just lists last season's hardware (Atom N450 processor, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 160/250/320GB hard drive and so on).

What Asus really like to talk about here is the cloud computing aspect, which includes Access (for downloading and streaming data from ASUS @Vibe, Game Park, ASUS WebStorage and ASUS AP Bank) and Sharing (for sharing files, synchronising files/maps over different computers).

As always, mobility is tip-top with a battery life of up to 13.5 hours and a weight of 1.25kg (includes 6-celled battery).

Eee PC 1016P

Things get more interesting here. Eee PC 1016P is a "business" netbook with a brushed aluminium exterior and a button that takes it straight into "presentation mode" - we assume this is for when you want to make those powerpoint presentations and such. Asus also mention Syncables Desktop, which is used to synchronise e-mail/calendar with other devices.

Asus have not yet specified what kind of hardware it features, but we heard earlier it should be about the same as the Eee PC 1018P (see below).

Eee PC 1018P

Seems to be the new flagship of the Eee PC series and the most lightweight of the three with a thickness of just 2.2cm and weight of 1.1kg. It also seems to have the best hardware.

This includes an Atom N475 processor (1.83GHz), up to 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 250GB hard drive, draft-N WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and whatever else you might expect in terms of connectivity and ports. Oh yeah, there is USB 3.0 as well.

No word on pricing or availability just yet.
