French Archos have upgraded their Archos 13 netbook with Intel's Pine Trail platform. That in itself is not much news, but Archos have made a rather unusual choice in putting in an Atom processor that is actually made for nettops.
That may not necessarily be a bad thing as Intel Atom D510 is in fact the most powerful Atom processor you can get. Two cores and four threads, clocked to 1.66GHz and with 1MB of L2 cache, it should be handle a lot more number crunching than your average netbook. The downside is that the processor uses up twice as much power as one of the new Pineview processors actually made for netbooks.
To compensate, Archos 13 has been given a 10-celled battery, but that unfortunately says little about what kind of battery life you can expect. Archos has not really specified it either, saying only that the device has a "low consumption".
Other specs include the good old GMA graphics which is hard to get around, plus 2GB of RAM and a humble 160GB hard drive. The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. As of yet that is all the official info we have, but we are guessing that it will be similar to the earlier Archos 13 in other aspects.
For example, the display still measures 13.3 inches, and if nothing else has changed it will be LED-backlit and run a resolution of 1200 x 800 pixels. It should have the standard array of ports and connectivity.
Archos 13 has a starting weight of 1.5kg and is about 27mm thick. It might make an interesting choice for those who want an XL netbook, but if the price will look like anything of the older model ($800), yours truly doubts it will be much of a success.
