Apple logo Today Apple presented the newest version of their iPhone OS, 4.0. The biggest piece of news is multitasking support, a feature many have probably missed and one of the things that has been criticised the most about the iPad. There is also a Folder, Game Center, Unified Inbox, iBooks, iAd and some improvements for enterprise users that includes better data protection.

Multitasking

It has taking a long time to implement multitasking, but it seems they have done it right - they claim multitasking will hurt neither performance nor battery life. You switch between apps by double-tapping the Home button after which you simply pick the app you want from a list of open software. The switch should be completely smooth.

Folder

Quite simply a folder as you know it from other operating systems. Should make it a little easier to organise your apps.

Game Center

A standardised, social gaming system that brings people together for multiplayer games. It allows you to invite friends to games or add new ones, as well as match players of the same skill level. There will also be leaderboards to satisfy the more competetive users out there.

Unified Inbox

Unites your different e-mail accounts in one convenient location. It will also be possible to unite several Exchange accounts.

iBooks

Apple's online bookstore is not just for the iPad anymore. When iPhone OS 4.0 is launched, you will be able to synchronize bookmarks such that you can shut a book on your iPhone and open it up later in the same place on your iPad.

iAd

A new advertising platform that makes it easier for developers to offer their apps free of charge and still make money on advertisements. It is supposedly a revolutionary way to advertise in which the advertisement can be built into the app itself like an app-in-an-app, or at the very least it will not be as intrusive so as to make using the app annoying.

Enterprise features

Includes a way to better protect data, more Exchange accounts, Exchange Server 2010, SSL VPN support and wireless app distribution.

iPhone OS 4.0 is expected to launch in the summer, but if you are a developer, head on over to Apple Developer and download the iPhone SDK 4.0 Beta.
