Acer logo Today Acer announced the world's first netbook with Nvidia's ION 2 graphics, a little device by the name of Aspire One 532G. It features a display of just 10.1 inches, is about an inch thick and does not look like much, but when it comes to graphics it has more power than any other netbook on the market.

Unlike the old ION platform, ION 2 is actually just a dedicated GPU desinged for netbooks with Intel's Pine Trail platform. Since the latter integrates GPU and CPU, Nvidia had to come up with something new and that became ION 2. There is not much (confirmed) information available about ION 2 - Nvidia has not launched it officially yet, so Acer has withheld most of the details.

They do mention 512MB of dedicated memory, and that ION 2 can handle "mainstream gaming" and acceleration plus playback of HD (720p) video. It can actually play full HD (1080p) video as well - the display cannot, however, so in that case you will have to connect it to your TV or monitor via HDMI.

ION 2 will probably eat away at the battery, so to combat this the Aspire One 532G will also feature Nvidia Optimus technology. Optimus dynamically switches between the dedicated Nvidia and integrated Intel GPU - if you load up a game, ION 2 will power up and take over, and if you then decide to quit for e.g. some surfing, Optimus will switch right back to Intel's GMA 3150. As such you are always sure that the dedicated graphics never suck away the power needlessly (Acer promises a battery life of up to 10 hours).

Aspire One 532G has, as noted above, a 10.1 inch display (LED-backlit, HD resolution) and is based on Intel's Pine Trail platform with an Atom N450 processor (1.66GHz). In addition to that there is 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and the standard array of connectivity and I/Os plus HDMI and optional 3G.

It weighs 1kg and is an inch thick, and it will be available starting next month at an as of yet unspecified price.
