2010 is often called "year of the tablet" in IT news media, not in the least because Apple announced their long-awaied iPad device back in January. That triggered a chain reaction that most of the other large consumer electronics makers either announce or even launch tablets of their own, and now it seems Acer is coming along for the ride as well.
The people over at Digitimes are reporting that we will be seeing a couple of tablets from Acer sometime in the fourth quarter of 2010. According to them, it will be a smaller 7 inch device and a larger 10 inch tablet. They refer to sources working in the industry and mention the OS will supposedly be Android 2.2, which means Adobe Flash support.
Most of us probably take that for granted, but it is still pretty important when it comes to tablets. The reason is mostly that Apple's iPad - the device all new tablets are inevitably benchmarked against - cannot do Flash. Whether you like Apple or not, you cannot die most video on the web is Flash, so being able to play it is obviously advantageous.
But back to the as of yet unofficial tablets. We actually know very little when it comes to specs, other than that both should be powered by an ARM-based processor. Acer noted earlier that it would be obvious to sell such devices via operators, so we naturally expect 3G.
As noted above, the two are expected out in quarter four, but we will wait with getting excited about them until we hear more (official) information.
