Acer are jumping on the eReader bandwagon with today's announcement of LumiRead, a 6 inch device with an E-ink display which - unlike the typical "glossy" display you find on notebooks - can be used in direct sunlight.
LumiRead comes with a QWERTY keyboard a la Amazon Kindle, has 2GB of flash storage which can hold over 1000 books (can be extended via microSD card), WiFi, and integrated 3G.
That ensures constant access to e-books from Barnes & Noble (English), Libri.de (German) and Founder (Chinese). Acer are also negotiating deals with French and Italian booksellers - there is no mention of any other languages.
Otherwise LumiRead features an ISBN scanner, allowing you to scan and save barcodes for creating wish lists. Fun idea, but unless you actively walk around libraries or bookstores searching for books, use is probably limited.
There is also a built-in browser and Acer clear.fi, a solution that allows you to share data (such as music, audio- and e-books) with other devices across different platforms.
Acer also presented a 7 inch tablet - it looked a lot like LumiRead, but clearly had an Android OS. Acer did not say much about it, except noting it would be "obvious" to sell it in cooperation with operators, suggesting it features 3G.
The LumiRead should be ready sometime in Q3 and the mysterious tablet in Q4. Unfortunately that is all we know at this point.
