Acer logo Today Acer launched their newest Aspire laptop, AS8943G, which falls directly into the Ethos seriesn. The latest Aspire notebook is a huge 18.4 incher that has pretty much everything a multimedia enthusiast could wish for.

The large display has LED-backlighting, is covered by a plate of glass and - as is appropriate for such a beast - runs a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. A blu-ray drive allows you to take proper advantage of the display, but there is of course also both HDMI and VGA ports if you would rather watch films on your HDTV.

To cover audio it has five speakers with Dolby-optimised surround sound and a dedicated subwoofer. The audio jack features Dolby Home Theatre Audio for those who prefer to use headphones or their own sound system.

Acer Aspire AS8943G can be used for a whole lot more than just movies and music, though. The device is equipped with a powerful collection of hardware that includes an Intel Core i7-720QM processor (quad-core, 1.6GHz, 6M cache) with both Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM (which you can upgrade to 16GB if you so choose) and a 500GB hard drive. The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.

The GPU comes from ATi and is called Radeon HD 5850 (1GB). A proper gaming card with DirectX-11 compatibility, it should not have too much of a problem running newer games on medium or higher settings.

Connectivity and I/Os include draft-N WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, Bluetooth v3.0 + EDR, 4x USB, eSATA/USB combo, Firewire, HDMI, VGA, CIR and a multi-in-1 card reader plus the mandatory audio jacks.

Other features include an aluminium lid, chiclet keyboard, a dual-mode multi-touch trackpad with integrated multimedie touch buttons, 1.3MP webcam and fingerprint reader.

Aspire AS8943G starts at around $1600.
