The Indian government revealed at $35 tablet today. That sounds way too good to be true, but they keep going and say they hope to sell for as little as $10 once competition in the market grows.
So what do you get for such a paltry sum? That part does not seem to have been established exactly quite yet, but Sakshat (as the new tablet is called) should have a Linux or Android-based OS and 2GB of storage. It has a power consumption of just 2W, which is less than an Intel Atom processor by itself.
We do not know much more about the hardware, other than that there is WiFi and the device will be capable of playing YouTube videos. Well, at least there is plenty of entertainment then. Apparently there is a USB port as well, and the device obviously has a touch-screen, although we do know whether it is multi-touch capable.
That sounds great so far, but unfortunately it will only be available to students in India. That probably means a state subsidy is the cause of the low cost, but anything else would be unrealistic anyway. To sweeten the deal, the government launched a website full of digital education content.
The only question left is: if a country like India - which has a GDP per capita at least 10 times lower than many here in Europe - can make a scheme like this, why can't we?
